Contraindications for Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure and may be contraindicated for certain individuals.
To ensure patient safety and minimize the risk of adverse effects, teeth whitening is not recommended for clients with the following conditions:
• Pregnancy or lactation: Teeth whitening is contraindicated during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
• Recent oral surgery or periodontal treatment: This includes procedures such as gum grafting. Clients must allow a minimum healing period of 4–6 weeks before undergoing whitening.
• Severe gingival recession: Whitening agents may worsen tooth sensitivity and cause gingival irritation.
• Recent professional dental cleaning: Clients should wait at least 7 days after a dental cleaning before receiving a whitening treatment.
Clients with existing dental or oral health concerns are strongly advised to consult with a licensed dental professional prior to scheduling a teeth whitening procedure.
After Care Instructions
For optimal results and to minimize sensitivity, please follow the aftercare instructions below. Teeth will continue to whiten for up to 24 hours following your treatment.• Avoid highly pigmented foods and beverages for 24 hours, as teeth are more susceptible to staining during this period.
This includes: • Red wine • Cola and dark sodas • Coffee and tea • Red or dark sauces • Ketchup and mustard • Dark berries such as cherries, blueberries, and strawberries • Tobacco products
Aftercare: • Rinse your mouth with water after eating or drinking during the first 24 hours to help reduce staining. • Do not brush your teeth or use mouthwash immediately after treatment. • Toothbrush bristles may be too abrasive for temporarily dehydrated enamel. • Mouthwash may contain pigments that can interfere with the whitening process.
• Temporary tooth markings: Some teeth have natural white spots or internal markings. The whitening process may temporarily accentuate these areas for the first 24 hours; they will gradually blend back into the surrounding tooth colour.
• Sensitivity management: Mild sensitivity may occur. If discomfort develops later, over-the-counter pain relief such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen) may be taken as directed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will the results last?
• Teeth whitening results typically last 3–6 months, depending on individual tooth structure, oral hygiene practices, and lifestyle habits such as diet and smoking.
⸻
How many sessions will I need? • Most clients require one appointment only. • A standard treatment consists of 45 minutes of LED light therapy, divided into three 15-minute sessions. • In cases of heavy or deep staining, an additional session may be recommended. Results are immediate following treatment.
⸻
How much of a difference will I see? • Results vary from person to person. On average, clients experience a whitening improvement of 2–16 shades. • Results cannot be guaranteed, but a visible change will occur. Just as skin tans differently for everyone, teeth whiten differently based on individual factors.
⸻
Does teeth whitening hurt? • Teeth whitening does not damage or harm teeth. • Clients with pre-existing sensitivity generally do not experience increased sensitivity from treatment. • A remineralizing agent is applied post-treatment to coat and protect the enamel, helping to prevent sensitivity.
⸻
I have crowns, veneers, or fillings on my front teeth. Can I still get whitening done? • Yes. While restorations do not whiten like natural teeth, they can accumulate surface stains that may be reduced with whitening over time. • Whitening the surrounding natural teeth can help improve overall brightness and create a more cohesive appearance. This is commonly referred to as a restoration match appointment.
⸻
How often can I have teeth whitening done?
• To maintain enamel safety, clients may complete up to two full treatments within a four-week period. • If no sensitivity is experienced after the initial treatment, it is recommended to wait 3–4 months before undergoing another whitening session.
